Duel Round 2
Duel Round 1
Term 2 History of Magic Assignment
The first part of the class assignment is written ….. but it’s also partly ‘pretend’. For the sake of the assignment, you will pretend that you are on the Hogwarts Debate Team (not that we have one, but ….. ) …… the question before the Debate Team is: Should House Elves be freed across the board, by law or decree of the Ministry of Magic? You will need to prepare to argue both sides of this question, as you don’t know which side you will be assigned to. You may present your answers in one of 2 forms - as an outline or as a written statement. Remember - you will need an outline/statement for each side of the question. Please try to keep your answers short enough to take up less a full ‘page’ in the classroom! ::grins::
The written part of this assignment is worth 10 points for your House and must be completed and posted here, in the classroom, before you can earn extra credit for the fun part. :)
Free an Elf!
For an extra 25 points, knit or crochet a mini sock as a symbol of freedom for the Elves. As we all recall, Dobby was freed from virtual slavery with the Malfoy family when Harry tricked Malfoy senior into giving Dobby a book that also contained an article of clothing … specifically, a sock.
Your sock can be any pattern (or plain!), any style, any color or combination of colors. In size, it can be no larger than a baby sock. You can create a pair of baby socks & submit them for your project, but this part of the project will still be worth only 25 points.
Pictures of your project must be posted to the classroom, so we can all ooh & aah over them. If you need help doing this, Bebe eKNITabeth, one of our awesome Assistant Deputy Headmistresses, can help you …. check with her in the I.T. Dungeon thread.
Please do not use projects you have already made & used in other groups for this part of the assignment. Create a sock just to free an Elf.
Term 2 Herbology Assignment
Please take a picture of your favorite muggle plant. Please identify the plant and give a short (4-5 sentences) paragragh about the plant. It may be about the climates it grows in, or maybe the way you care for it. It may take a little research on your part to find out these things about your favorite plant. You may post this to the thread or to your blog with a link here. You may find this website helpful in finding info on your plants. This assignment is worth 20 points
Extra Credit:
With any form of crafting, please make you interpretation of a mandrake root. It may be a knit crochet painted ect. This site has some very interesting info on the mandrake along with this site, you should be able to get a good idea of what a mandrake root is. 25 points
I hope you all enjoy this assignment! Please let me know if I can be of any assistance! This is due by September first at midnight est.
Term 2 Potions Assignment
Here’s your assignment: worth 10 points
Potions are magical liquids created by mixing various ingredients in a cauldron according to very specific rules. These mixtures must usually be drunk to give their magical effect. The ingredients in potions range from the mundane to the bizarre and fantastic, and the procedures for creating some potions can be complicated and time-consuming.
1 What were two potions made during Harry’s first year in Potions class?
2 What potion were the students making during the second year when Harry threw a firecracker in Goyle’s cauldron to create a diversion?
3 What potion imported from Peru did the Weasley brothers give Harry when he visited their store in Hogsmeade in Half Blood Prince?
4 Name 5 ingredients available in the Students Store cupboard at Hogwarts.
5 What tricky potion, which is an O.W.L. standard, is taught in fifth-year Potions?
6 What is the N.E.W.T.-level textbook for Potions during Harry’s sixth year?
7 Who invented Wolfsbane potion and who’s uncle was he?
8 What 2 ingredients in your kitchen will make a fizzy potion? (used in home remedies to help with bee stings)
9 What ingredient added to a carbonated drink will make the drink foam? ( We all love these!)
Hint: A tree has …, your pint of ….. is on the bar , and you ….down a river
Now for the Extra Credit worth 25 points
I thought I would give you guys a break from Potions work. I know we need to get our mitt, gloves, whatever done for our spoilee….We can’t forget about them. So for extra credit PM me with a picture of your mitts, gloves, whatever starting (as in the cast on) or where ever you are at now.. and a pic of them next Tuesday when you have made some progress on them or if you get them done by then. Please don’t post the pics here as we don’t want to spoil our surprises. You must show some progress. At least 10 rows or an inch. Whichever comes first.
If you are some of the lucky ones ( pandoraphelps archerpren ) who have finished their mitts, gloves, whatever. Then I would like for you to do one of these cool potions for your assignment. Pick which ever one you want to do or if you can answer number 9 in the quiz then you may do that one. But I want to see proof as in pics of your experiment.
So no time to waste….get out your potions books and get started!!!!
Oh and don’t forget to sign your posts for your quiz! :)

Right here they are. Pens & parchment ready? Then here we go.

An extra 10 points can be earned by recording one of your dreams & analysing it.

Good Luck Everyone.

Term 2 Charms Assignment
Project Assignment:
Out of 35 possible points.
Extra credit of 35 points possible
Due: August 4 (Tuesday)
For every Charms student, a wand is the most essential tool. I would like each of you to try your hand at wand-making. Using common household items (and whatever else you may be able to find at the local crafts store), please construct a wand for yourself.
In addition to constructing your wand, please include the following: a list of (Muggle) materials you used and 2-5 sentences about why your wand has picked you. You can talk about wand wood, core, length, flexibility or anything else that may be special.
Also, each student must have a place to put his or her wand when class is over. For the extra credit part of the assignment, you are to construct a wand pouch. Again, use whichever materials you can find at the local crafts store, but I have found that both knitting and crocheting work quite well.
Grading Rubric:
Wand Construction: (25 points)
* Is this portion of the assignment finished and did the student follow directions?
* Did the student make a decent wand that would be functional in the classroom?
* How much artistic style did the student put into making the wand?
Written Portion: (10 points)
* List of Muggle materials?
* Short written analysis of his or her wand?
EXTRA CREDIT
Wand Pouch Construction: (35 points)
* Is the assignment finished and did the student follow directions?
* What is the quality of the pouch? How well will it function?
* Is the wand pouch aesthetically pleasing?

Term 2 Astronomy Assignment
Let’s begin with a basic class, here goes:
::reads from text::(Source here)
Astronomy (from the Greek words astron (ἄστρον), “star”, and nomos (νόμος), “law”) is the scientific study of celestial objects (such as stars, planets, comets, and galaxies) and phenomena that originate outside the Earth’s atmosphere (such as the cosmic background radiation). It is concerned with the evolution, physics, chemistry, meteorology, and motion of celestial objects, as well as the formation and development of the universe.
Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences. Astronomers of early civilizations performed methodical observations of the night sky, and astronomical artifacts have been found from much earlier periods. However, the invention of the telescope was required before astronomy was able to develop into a modern science. Historically, astronomy has included disciplines as diverse as astrometry, celestial navigation, observational astronomy, the making of calendars, and even astrology, but professional astronomy is nowadays often considered to be synonymous with astrophysics.
So, for your assignment, select one planet and on your blog, linking in a post below (Or here if you don’t have a blog) select one planet or celestial body (star, moon, sun) and tell us a little about it in 4-5 sentences. 10 points due July 21
For extra credit, using any craft medium of your choosing, create a celestial body. (If making stitch markers, must be at least 4) 25 points due july 21
My Answers:
Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun and the larget of all the planets. It is one of the 4 gas giants of the solar system. It was named by the Romans after their god, who was the leader of the Olympian gods as well as the god of thunder - makes sense why they named this one gets the name since its HUGE:). In Japan it is concidered the wood star - hence why on Sailor Moon (manga and anime), Sailor Jupiter has the color green and shoots a lot of leaves and what not when she attacks, tho in the US cartoon of it she yells out stuff with lightning and thunder in the name but still has the leaves in the attack itself, give on to us Americans for mixing mythology:) Other mythology Jupiter is assiociated with is Norse Mythology's Thor - also god of thunder tho not leader of the gods that was Odin; Babylonian Mythology's Marduk - which was their god of water, vegitation, judgement, and magic, which sounds a little like the Japanesse's Mythology of Jupiter. hehe I love mythology and how they all connect:D
sooo yeah i didnt realize that this assignment was already posted cause i thought that we were waiting till each assignment was turned in before a new one was posted but its okie, i didnt have time to make a celetial body for extra credit sadly:(

2) Heart Number: 5
3) Social Number: 4
Extra Credit Voluntary Assignment:
Should you desire to explore Arithmancy further, knit or crochet an item that illustrates one of your above answers.
For Example: If one of your three numbers is
1 This is the number of the individual, the solitary unit. Ones are independent, focused, and determined. They set a goal and stick to it. They are leaders and inventors. Ones find it difficult to work with others and don’t like to take orders. They can be self-centered, egotistical, and domineering. They are often loners.
You could create a wolf to illustrate the lone wolf aspect;
or should one of your three come out to be
4 Like a table that rests solidly on four legs, four indicates stability and firmness. Fours enjoy hard work. They are practical, reliable and down to earth; they prefer logic and reason to flights of fancy. They are good at organization and getting things done. Like the cycle of the four seasons, they are also predictable. They can be stubborn, suspicious, overly practical and prone to angry outbursts. The conflicts possible in “two” are doubled in four.
Something practical, or something to illustrate the wheel of the year/four seasons.
As long as you can explain the significance, I’m willing to listen and grade
Grade points: 25 for the extra credit assignment
NOTE: This portion of the assignment is voluntary!
My Answers:
1) 9 = Represents completion and achievement to the fullest degree (as it is the complete number, three, expressed three times). Nines dedicate themselves to service, often as teachers, scientists, and humanitarians. Strongly determined, they work tirelessly and are an inspiration to others. However, they can also be arrogant and conceited when things don't go their way.2) 5 = Five is the number of instability and imbalance, indicating change and uncertainty. Fives are drawn to many things at once but commit to none. They are adventurous, energetic and willing to take risks. They enjoy travel and meeting new people but may not stay in one place very long. Fives can be conceited, irresponsible, quick-tempered and impatient.
3) 4 = Like a table that rests solidly on four legs, four indicates stability and firmness. The conflicts possible in "two" are doubled in four.
